HERBST PLAN MAY SERVE AS MODEL

Attorneys Gerald Gordon and Erika Pike Turner believe they have seen the future of some Las Vegas casino operators in the bankruptcy of Herbst Gaming Inc. and affiliated companies.
Herbst lost its casinos and slot routes as a result of bankruptcy. But the lawyers at Gordon Silver say the Herbst bankruptcy also left a legacy for the gaming industry -- a blueprint for how to restructure a casino company and leave an ongoing business for customers, employees and creditors.

Gerald Gordon expects casinos to be sold and different companies to enter the gaming industry because they can do so at bargain prices.
For more than three decades, Las Vegas casino owners have gone to Gerald Gordon for advice on how to avoid bankruptcy and how to emerge from it as viable businesses.
He successfully led the Landmark, which billionaire Howard Hughes once owned, out of bankruptcy only to see it be imploded after it failed again. He was lead counsel for the Silverbird in the late 1970s.

BANKRUPTCIES JUMP 71 PERCENT IN NEVADA

With the state's economy in a free fall, the number of bankruptcy filings in Nevada exploded last year.
The Southern Nevada economy "is disproportionately built upon gaming and real estate sectors, and both are very hard-hit sectors," said Gregory Garman, a bankruptcy attorney and managing partner of law firm Gordon Silver.

POST-BANKRUPTCY FINANCING HARDER TO SECURE IN CRISIS

Businesses with good credit say they are having trouble getting loans because of the credit crisis. So it's not surprising that companies operating with the protection of bankruptcy court are being left high and dry, too.
Since last year's fourth quarter, businesses that are candidates for Chapter 11 bankruptcy have encountered difficulties lining up post-bankruptcy financing, says Gregory Garman, managing partner at law firm Gordon Silver.
